Lions on the move

If you have returned to Conil and are wondering what is happening to the PlazaEspaña and where is the fountain with the lions, think no more. The lions and fountain have been cleaned and are now sitting next to c/Laguna infront of Bar Celedon. What replaces the Lions in Plaza España? Benches and trees, plus new ornate lighting and maybe a statue or two. Time will tell

Wandering the streets looking for an early breakfast?

Although there are bars that cater for the fisherman going to the port, and people on their way to work, the majority of more accessible places sem to be shut until 10.00am. Plus you maybe craving for something a little more filling than coffee and toast. Enter 2 new contenders.

1). Cafe bar Panaiso situated on the road that leads up from the beach towards el Palmar to the east of town. Calle Virgen de la Luz. Open form 07.00 everyday, they serve hot and cold breakfasts.

2). Arroz y Leche, Calle Mercurio. Almost opposite the market. The bar also serves hot and cold breakfasts. See the link for opening times.

Shopping - Smallest shop and gallery in Conil

A new addition to the retail scene is La Habita. The shop is at the bottom of the calle José Tomás Borrego situated opposite the bar Medina (calle Cadiz). The shop, despite its size, is an outlet for the photography of the owner, Silvana, who combines her background as a graphic designer, having worked for many years in some of the worlds best know Ad agencies in Germany, including Ogilvy and Mather. with her love of Andalucian life. The resulting images, all taken locally are available framed or just with a passepartout, enabling you to frame the picture yourself.

The photographs start from as little as 5 euros for a framed print, with smaller items such as bookmarks and fridge magnets also available. Silvana started selling hand made postcards using her photos while living in Mallorca 3 years ago. Since moving to Conil a couple of years ago she has been saving up her money with a view to opening her own shop.

In addition to Silvana's photographs the shop also offers hand made ceramics from the Pascale Pérez-Stalder workshop in Cadiz, (further information available here www.cadizayto.es/pascale), hand made palm leaf bags and hand made jewellery. New items are always being added. The shop also has for sale small collectable items reflecting the history of southern Andalucia.

Language Confusion

On arrival in Conil, despite your hours of listening to teach yourself spanish tapes, you may come to the conclusion that some conileños aren't singing from the same hymn sheet.

This is mostly due to local pronunciation, or lack of it, cutting off the back end of many words. Then there is a chance they may throw in some local words all of their own. Many of these have roots in arabic.

Here are a few and I'll add more later on.

Conileño - Spanish - English

Azadura - Higado - Liver
Un Pone - Por Ejemplo - for example
De Aquiana - En Poco tiempo - In a little while (Shortly)
